Gold: Immunology and the Eye for Docet (Directorate of Optometric Continuing Education and Training) by Radical Departures

Optometrists regularly come across patients affected by allergies and autoimmune conditions, but may have minimal understanding of immunology, potentially leading to inappropriate management and/or referrals. This learning course is a mixture of written content, animations and video interviews with expert contributors, aiming to increase optometrists’ knowledge and confidence.

The course was awarded 5 CPD points, with 2,348 unique enrolments between March 2024 and May 2025. The units have been rated as good or excellent by 98% of completers and written feedback shows its impact against objectives: “One of the best explanations of this I’ve ever encountered.”

Judge’s Comments

Judges really liked this well-crafted and empowering course that resonated with its audience, saying the balance of expert insight, accessible visuals, and real-world relevance has created something very special. A clear and simple bite-sized presentation that enhanced the learning experience helped to hit the messages home. The outcome of 14% of UK optometrist enrolment was impressive, substantially over-achieving on the target benchmark objective of >10%, and this was combined with real clinical impact through enhanced prescribing scope.

The panel acknowledged it was terrific to see such care taken to bridge clinical science with everyday practice. This was evidenced in heartfelt feedback that showed just how valued and impactful this training has been for optometrists and their patients. Judges also highlighted the lucid, forward-looking rationale for prioritising immunology, which was aligned with evolving NHS England priorities and the expanding role of optometrists.

Key take-home for the judges was that this deeply learner-focused programme succeeded not only in uptake but also in clinical behaviour influence; the thoughtful design and strong outcomes made it a standout Gold in applied education.
