15 Committee members met on the 10th March to review the 2016/17 strategic plan for the Society presented by Co-Chairs Carwyn Jones and Rachel Farrow. Key topics for the discussion were succession planning within the Society, the Patient Engagement and Market Access interest groups, the communication plan for the Society and the idea of setting up a PM Society Foundation.
The PM Society, the organisation driving marketing excellence and education in the life sciences industries, has appointed David Southern, director, Pathway Communications to lead its NHS Partnerships Interest Group. Founding lead Ivor Eisenstadt has retired from the voluntary PM Society post due to increasing demands in his business MGP Ltd, publishers of Medendium, Guidelines and eguidelines.co.uk, and increased involvement in local CCG Patient Participation Groups.
Partnership working between the industry and the NHS is one of the key issues for today’s pharma and life sciences marketers and is the driving force behind the PM Society’s NHS Partnerships Interest Group. David Southern has been chosen because he offers a breadth of experience across the NHS and industry and offers the enthusiasm to build on the work of the group to date.
He explains: “The PM Society NHS Partnerships Interest Group has been extremely active from the outset in sharing understanding of how industry can work with the NHS in this new era. Standalone events for members and a presence at key meetings has enabled both doctors, commissioners and industry representatives to share best practice, inform and educate. I am looking forward to progressing opportunities such as this to promote excellence in NHS joint-working.”
David Southern established Pathway Communications in 2008 in response to the rapidly changing healthcare sector. Since its formation he has worked with both primary and secondary care trusts developing and implementing new clinical services. He has also worked with pharmaceutical companies developing their NHS strategy. Before setting up Pathway Communications, David worked in the Pharmaceutical industry for 15 years and has developed industry-leading solutions enabling organisations to describe the value they add to the health care sector and thereby add value to patients, the NHS, and suppliers. He has also worked with pharmaceutical companies developing their NHS strategy and innovative patient pathway modelling solutions.
The PM Society NHS Partnerships Interest Group
According to data presented for the first time in June 2012, nearly 90% of NHS commissioners with experience of an NHS/ industry joint working project would consider doing it again to improve patient care. Additionally, over 80% reported that they saw it as a means to achieve cost efficiencies or redesign clinical services in a priority area. However, barriers to involvement were cited as lack of time and/or experience, hinting at low confidence to engage.
The PM Society NHS Partnerships Interest Group was set up in 2012 to tackle barriers to involvement in joint working by sharing examples of good practice and lessons learned. It also provides practical support to bring the NHS and industry closer together to develop higher quality care for patients and improved mutual understanding and trust.
